Stephonia Llewellyn, LMHC - Online Therapist in Florida

Introduction

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with children and adolescents ages 6–17, as well as mothers navigating pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood. I strive to create a supportive, culturally responsive, and emotionally safe space where clients feel seen, understood, and empowered.

I support children and teens experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional regulation challenges, ADHD, self-esteem concerns, trauma, grief, and family or school-related stressors. I understand that young clients often express themselves through behavior rather than words, so I use developmentally appropriate and play-based approaches to help them communicate, process emotions, and build coping skills.

In my work with adults, I specialize in maternal mental health, including prenatal anxiety, postpartum depression and anxiety, identity changes after becoming a parent, parenting stress, and adjustment challenges. I am deeply passionate about supporting mothers through these transitions and providing a non-judgmental space to process their experiences, reduce overwhelm, and reconnect with themselves.

My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and strengths-based. I draw from evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Adlerian Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and play-based interventions, including sand tray and expressive techniques. I tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs, goals, and developmental stage.

As a Black therapist with Caribbean roots, I value cultural humility and understand how family systems, identity, and lived experience shape mental health. I am especially committed to supporting children, mothers, and families from diverse backgrounds in a way that feels respectful and affirming.

I believe therapy should feel both grounding and empowering. My goal is to help clients develop emotional insight, confidence, and practical tools they can carry into their daily lives.

What can I expect in my first few sessions with?

In our first session we’ll focus on getting to know you (or your child) and creating a safe, respectful space. Expect an intake that covers your background, current concerns, and any immediate risks or safety needs. I’ll ask about family, school/work, relationships, and—when relevant—pregnancy, birth, or postpartum experiences. For children and teens I often combine talk with developmentally-appropriate methods like play or sand tray to understand how they express feelings.

After the initial assessment we’ll co-create a simple, personalized treatment plan with clear goals and practical steps. I’ll explain the therapeutic methods I’m recommending (for example CBT, Trauma-Focused CBT, Play Therapy, or Narrative Therapy), how sessions usually work, and what you can expect between sessions. My style is collaborative — you set the pace, and I adapt interventions to fit your cultural values, family system, and daily life. I also handle paperwork, consents, and insurance details transparently so you know what to expect logistically.

What makes you different from other therapists?

I bring clinical training plus cultural lived experience to my work. As a Black, Caribbean LMHC practicing in South Florida, I’ve spent four years working with children, adolescents, families, and moms during pregnancy and postpartum—especially within African American, Hispanic, and Caribbean communities. That combination of cultural understanding and child-focused therapeutic tools (Play Therapy, Sand Tray, Trauma-Focused techniques) lets me see and support people in ways that feel both practical and culturally respectful.

I’m trauma-informed, outcome-driven, and warm — I prioritize meeting clients where they are, honoring their pace, and partnering with families to build resilience. If you’re a parent or pregnant/postpartum person, I bring specific experience supporting maternal mental health. I also aim to make therapeutic services accessible and transparent — reach out and I’ll explain insurance and consent options.

What inspired you to become a therapist?

My journey is rooted in community, culture, and a desire to support healing across generations. Growing up Caribbean and Black shaped how I see the world: I’ve witnessed strength, but also the unique stresses families face. I wanted to combine clinical skills with cultural empathy to help children, teens, and mothers find healthier ways to cope, connect, and heal. Working with families—especially supporting pregnant and postpartum people—felt like a meaningful place to make a real difference, so I trained as a therapist and have dedicated my practice to that work.
