Paola Mendoza-Rivera, PhD

Paola Mendoza-Rivera, PhD, is a bilingual Spanish-speaking licensed psychologist. She completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Palo Alto University, and she completed her doctoral internship at Wellpath – South Florida State Hospital. Her primary career goals involve providing bilingual psychological services as well as conducting bicultural research that both directly target and address the existing health disparities and systemic inequality within clinical and forensic settings. During her graduate training, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera has worked with underserved cultural minorities, such as Latinx individuals, who are frequently over-represented in the legal and criminal justice systems of the United States. Her previous clinical experience includes providing psychotherapeutic services and administering clinical as well as forensic assessments to adults and juveniles within community mental health and in-patient correctional settings.

Dr. Mendoza-Rivera is experienced in assessing for and treating various mental health disorders, such as neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., ADHD), mood/thought disorders, and personality disorders. She offers bilingual services (i.e., individual therapy, clinical/forensic evaluations) to teens and adults through a culturally-informed lens with an added focus on trauma-informed treatment and assessment administration.

Dr. Mendoza-Rivera offers bilingual services through a culturally-informed lens with an added focus on trauma-informed treatment and assessment administration. Research-wise, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera is an alumna of the Clinical Crises and Emergencies (CCER) research lab at Palo Alto University. Under the mentorship of Dr. Bruce Bongar in the CCER, she collaborated on a variety of projects studying the assessment and management of suicide risk, cultural differences in suicide risk and protective factors, and the propagation of social inequity through the continued practice of non-culturally responsive psychological assessment. In her dissertation, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera piloted the Spanish adaptation of the Cultural Assessment of Risk for Suicide (CARS) measure, which is the only known culturally responsive suicide risk assessment.

In the future, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera aspires to further her cross-cultural work to improve the quality and relevance of clinical and forensic assessments available for Spanish-speaking communities. As well, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera is interested in furthering her cross-cultural consultation efforts. During her free time, Dr. Mendoza-Rivera enjoys reading and spending time in nature. She is also the co-founder of the Instagram blog “Puerto Ricans Having Doubts” (@puertoricans.having.doubts.phd), in which she served as a mental health advocate for fellow graduate students.”

What can I expect in my first few sessions with?

Our first session will be a chance to get to know each other and begin exploring what brings you to therapy. I focus heavily on building a strong therapeutic relationship, as I believe it’s one of the most important factors in creating lasting change. Feeling safe, understood, and supported is the foundation for any meaningful work we’ll do together. I try my very best to meet you exactly where you are. Whether you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, hopeful, or uncertain. My goal is to create a space that feels grounded, respectful, and tailored to your unique journey, so we can move forward at a pace that feels right for you.

What makes you different from other therapists?

As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I take a collaborative and goal-focused approach to therapy. I believe lasting change happens when people feel truly seen, supported, and empowered to take ownership of their growth. My role is to create a space where you can explore your experiences without judgment, clarify what matters most to you, and begin taking meaningful steps toward the life you want. Whether you're navigating a life transition, dealing with anxiety or stress, or feeling stuck, I’m here to help you build insight, develop practical tools, and move forward with intention and confidence.

What inspired you to become a therapist?

I’ve always been drawn to meaningful work, and becoming a therapist felt like a natural way to make a real difference in people’s lives. I’m inspired every day by the strength people show in facing their challenges, even when they feel uncertain or overwhelmed. There’s something incredibly powerful about witnessing someone gain clarity, reconnect with themselves, and begin to believe in their ability to change. I see therapy as a collaborative process, where I walk alongside you, offering support, insight, and tools as you work toward your goals. It's an honor to be part of that journey.
